Notable Features Refreshed LookML Syntax and Development Environment LookML and the Looker IDE get a makeover! A refreshed LookML syntax leans on its YAML roots, but sports a number of improvements to make the language easier to learn, write, and understand. The development environment has been similarly done up to provide dynamic documentation, syntax error checking, and autosuggestion. To ease your transition to the refreshed LookML syntax, there is a LookML converter. While conversion is not complicated, the LookML Validator is more robust, so previously hidden errors may be surfaced. A Looker Scavenger Hunt One of the best ways of learning to use Looker is to try to puzzle out some answers. We’ll start by exploring a simple table of all of the airports in the USA. Start Exploring from Here, hit Command-K to clear the surface. Using Measures (hint: just add a measure) The first thing we are going to learn about is measures. Measures are computations about a set of things. In this first example, we are going to compute measure against the entire set of airports (facilities, actually, there are heliports, gliderports and more in this data set). To answer each of the following questions you will only need to use only a single measure. Question: How many facilities are there in the airports table (figure it out here)? Answer (click to reveal):
Most of the time, exploring data is about counting things. Find the ‘Count’ measure which adds it to the table, then hit the ‘Run’ button. Run the Query
Question: How many facilities (airports) have con
July 19, 2016, 12:14pm – Service Restored Looker Operations has restored service and your Looker instances should be operating without issue. Please note, Amazon is still experiencing issues that we will continue to monitor. July 19, 2016, 11:27am – Service Impacted Amazon is investigating a problem with an increase in API error rates in the AWS region where we host your instance. This is causing outbound connectivity issues which would impact database connectivity. We do not currently have an ETA from Amazon but we are monitoring the issue.
This is a great opportunity to join an early-stage, but rapidly-growing startup. The data team is currently only 3 members, so you’d have tons of room to grow and learn. We use Looker, Redshift, and the Python data stack. You can read about the job here. Email me at dweitzenfeld@ or apply online!
