What is a cURL API call, and what does it look like?Knowledge Drop

Last tested: Nov 4, 2020 cURL is a command-line utility available on most Unix/Linux based operating systems which can be used to make an HTTP network request and receive the response either interactively as you type or in a bash shell script. cURL can make any kind of HTTP requests, configure request headers, and upload data in request bodies for POST, PUT, and PATCH requests. For quick-and-dirty testing or exploration of an HTTP service or REST API, curl is a simple but powerful tool.As with any use of the Looker API, the first thing you need to do when using cURL is call /login to authenticate and receive an access_token. Why isn't my date field being timezone converted in the WHERE clause?Knowledge Drop

Last tested: Jan 23, 2018 This question comes up from time to time and the answer is that the pattern is expected at the moment. For example, both code blocks below have Looker generated SQL for a date field. The SELECT statement has a convert timezone directly on the date field, but in the WHERE statement the convert timezone is on the date from the filter (i.e. is on the day 1-21-2018)A way to think of what is going on is as follows:The user has asked, essentially, “in my timezone (LA / PST) what events happened on 2018-01-21"? In the database timezone (UTC), that means “What events happened between 2018-01-21 08:00 - 2018-01-22 08:00? This is the reasoning for the WHERE statement.And then, Lookers converts in the SELECT because we don’t want to show the UTC time, instead we want to show the user the user specific query timezone (LA / PST). I want to move/copy a dashboard to an embed user's folder but I do not see their folder listedKnowledge Drop

Shared Filters on Single Value Charts Performance Technique

How does caching work for downloads?Knowledge Drop

Last tested: Jun 11, 2019 Results in TableWhen downloading the same number of rows as the Explore the download query will run against the Explore cache until the cached results are invalidated.All Results/CustomWhen downloading a different number of rows than are returned in the Explore the SQL query is changed, so the download will run against the database.What about subsequent downloads?This is still unclear. How can I merge user attribute values from multiple groups?Knowledge Drop

Last tested: March 2021 Background: Groups are given user attribute values. For example, group_USA might be given the value for the “country” user attribute as “USA”. With an access filter, users in that group will get WHERE country = “USA” for their queries.The issue: If a user belongs to two groups, like group_USA and group_UK, each with different “country” user attribute values, this user will not inherit both user attribute values. Other types of permissions are additive with groups, but user attributes are not: one will “win out”.To solve the scenario where someone would need access to both countries, you might think you need to create a user attribute for each combination of user attribute values. While that would work, managing all the combinations might get unwieldy. The following pattern is an alternative.1. Create a user attribute for each possible individual value. Can I use `hidden` on a join?Knowledge Drop

Last Tested: Mar 5, 2021 No, you can use hidden only at the explore and field level (documentation).BUT, there are workarounds. Method 1: use fields: [] instead on the join (documentation). This will effectively do the same thing as hidden would because it tells Looker to not bring any fields into the explore. What does "async socket check failed" mean in the logs?Knowledge Drop

Last tested: Oct 25, 2019 Basically there is a connection between the client browser and Looker server that Looker periodically checks. Whenever it fails, an async socket check failure happens, and Looker says “no need to keep running a query if nobody is waiting for it. Terminate db session”Note that in response to the async socket check failure, Looker will initiate a kill command to the database; for example, for Snowflake Looker will initiate CALL SYSTEM$CANCEL_ALL_QUERIES(#{sick_query_data[:connection_id]}) . This does NOT mean that Looker is initiating the timeout—as noted here, Looker does not timeout queries once they have been sent to the database. While Looker may be initiating the CANCEL_ALL_QUERIES command, it is only doing so in response to a closed connection between the UI client and the Looker server (supported by the socket check failure in the logs being first in the sequence of events).tl;dr: there’s usually something client-side responsible for this failure. Why can't I access chat?Knowledge Drop

Last tested: April 2021 If you don't see the chat option in the Help Menu:Permissions: Anyone with the develop permission can come on chat. This means that admins have this capability too. Check if the user is missing the develop permission.License type: If you have a partner license type you will not have chat access starting April 1st 2021. As for trials, trials which were initiated after Jan 5th 2021 will not have chat feature toggled on. Can you format dates in table calculations?Knowledge Drop

Last Tested: Jan 21, 2019 If you have a date field with values such as "2021-01-01", you can use excel formatting to display the date as January 1, 2021. You can also use this approach to only display the month name, such as "January", etc.Excel uses the date January 1, 1900 as serial number 1. This means that January 1, 2008 is serial number 39448. In a table calculation, you can use the diff_days(start_date, end_date) function to return a number between your date field and January 1, 2008. Once you have that number, you can add 39448 to it.Given the above, this is the exact formula which can be used to allow the date to be formatted using the custom format syntax:diff_days(date(2008,01,01), ${orders.created_date}) + 39448 Once we have this defined, we can use the table calculation "Custom..." formatting option to display our dates as January 1, 2008.Outcome in the Explore UI:The available formatting options can be found here.   This content is subject to limited support.

30 Day Windows: Periods Starting from Today

Looker will not be updating this content, nor guarantees that everything is up-to-date. The ProblemWhen we want to look at our data in terms of 30-day periods, we can use Looker's built in month timeframe for dimension_group fields. However, this can pose a problem, as not all months are the same length. Also, in cases where the current day is in the middle of a month, the data for that "period" is incomplete. The goal in this case is to get a period for every 30 days (i.e., past 0-30 days = 1, past 30-60 days = 2, 60-90 days = 3, etc.), starting from today and moving backwards, by which to group our data. The SolutionIn Looker, we can achieve this pattern by placing a SQL function in the SQL: parameter of a dimension. For example, let's say that we have a date dimension_group called created:dimension_group: created { type: time timeframes: [time, date, month, raw] sql: ${TABLE}.date ;; }Then, all we need to do is create a new dimension of type: number to capture the number of days

How do I render a local image in Looker?Knowledge Drop

Troubleshooting Private Embedding + SAMLKnowledge Drop

Last tested: Oct 7, 2020 There are a number of errors and settings to be aware of when using SAML authentication in an iframe for private embedding. You can test things out using a simple online HTML editor, using the following iframe code:<iframe src="https://instance.looker.com/embed/dashboards/[id]" height="500" width="500"></iframe> 401: You are not authenticated to view this pageIf you are not already logged into Looker, you will get this page by default when you attempt to access the embed URL through the iframe instead of getting the Authenticate button.
