You can specify the date range for dimension fill by filtering on your date dimension for that range.
Let's say you only have data until the end of 2016 but want the years 2016 and 2017 to appear in your visualization with nulls, dimension fill will only fill in dates until your last date by default. If you add in a filter to filter on something like before 2018, dimension fill will fill in dates through the end of 2017.
