Are pbf tile formats supported in Looker when creating custom map layers?

Nope, we will actually need to use .mvt files. Please refer to this Community post on setting up the custom map layer. If you have .pbf files, you can use Tippecanoe to output mapbox vector tiles (.mvt) just as easily as it can do protobufs (.pbf).
