Hey Looker Community! I’m Seema. I work on the Customer Experience team at Looker, so genuine customer feedback is really important to me. I also value gender equality in the workplace (as does everyone here at Looker) and assuring the success of young women who may grow up to work in computing. I’m guessing you do as well. That’s why I’m writing about how you can help with both of these things in one fell swoop - simply by providing us with a 5-minute review of Looker. Girls Who Code is on a mission to close the gender gap in technology. They’re building the largest pipeline of future female engineers in the United States! In support of that mission, Capterra, an independent tech and software review site, will donate $10 to “Girls Who Code” for each of the first 100 Looker users who complete a published review here. That’s $1000 for Girls Who Code! It’s simple and short. Click here and: Find Looker on Capterra Write a review Help Girls Who Code It only takes 5 minutes to do some go
Hello everyone! Remember that tomorrow morning (October 23rd), Discourse will go into “Read Only Mode” while we complete migration work over the weekend. On Tuesday October 27th, it will go fully live again on the new platform. There should be zero downtime for content. See this post for more details. All posts should be redirected and all accounts will still be present with history, though you will need to claim your account using the email address you currently use for discourse.looker.com. We will post instructions on how to do that! Looking forward to seeing you all over there 👋. If you have any questions about the community while Discourse is frozen, you can always email firstname.lastname@example.org. For any Looker support questions, please check out the Documentation and Help Center. You can file a support ticket here

Hey folks! Looker is being reviewed in the annual Dresner Wisdom of Crowds Survey, and I thought the community might like the opportunity to participate and give a personal review of Looker. As a participant, you actually get to shape an important industry report— and Dresner Advisory Services will send you a complimentary copy of the final version. The survey closes on March 29th, so make sure to get your input in before then. Here’s the link: https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/4734391/fc0a08347284 Thanks!
Hey Good Lookers, We had a bit of unplanned community downtime this evening, starting at around 5:15 PM PDT and mostly recurring through 12:30 AM the next day. That’s a long time to be unavailable, and while I hope you were all enjoying your weekends and not doing too much Lookering on a Friday night, I apologize if you were impacted by the downtime. We’ve taken steps to make sure that we can bounce back much more quickly given a similar event in the future. There was no security risk or loss of data involved, and there shouldn’t be any posts or activity missing from the site. Nothing to fret about! Have a lovely weekend, Izzy
This is a wrap-up of all the questions that we didn’t have time to get to live (or had to research the answers to) during the Q4 2020 “What’s New in Looker?” webinar. Didn’t make it to the webinar? Catch the recording here. Mobile AppRegarding the mobile app is there a plan for an iPad specific app? I tested on an iPad and it displays as phone sized, not filling the screen completely. Yes! The work for full iPad support is slated soon. Do links work in the mobile app? They should work fine! If you have a more specific question or aren’t seeing what you’d expect, feel free to drop a comment here. Is dashboards-next supported in the mobile app? The mobile app currently uses legacy dashboards, there’s no option to change the dashboard type at this time. To be clear, this just means that all dashboards will display in the legacy style— All dashboards, regardless of version, will be accessible and usable in the mobile app. How do user attributes work with the mobile app? tl;dr: The lookerapi python package for accessing the Looker API is deprecated. The unsupported package is now accessible via pip install lookerapi-deprecated. We encourage you to use our new, fully maintained SDK available here. What’s Happening? 4 New SDKs In the interest of making it easy to use the Looker API, Looker has previously documented how to use a tool called Swagger Codegen for users to generate their own client SDKs in languages of their choice. Over the years, folks have found it useful to have easier access to SDKs, and some of these user-generated packages have been pushed to various package managers (pip, npm, etc.). Those packages are not and were never officially maintained by Looker, but it’s proven very useful to have quick and easy ways to get started with the Looker API. We’ve noticed that! If you haven’t heard the news yet, we recently released a new Offical SDK generator called sdk-codegen, and along with it, 4 new official SDKs: Python (beta), Kotlin (alpha),
This is a super cool peek under the hood of Looker, written by our engineers and posted on our official engineering blog. It’s definitely software engineering heavy, but if you’re interested in looking into the inner workings of the Looker app, it’s really cool. https://medium.com/looker-engineering/turning-looker-up-to-11-daa00de88d4c
Hey all, During planned maintenance at 9:00pm PST today, we encountered some unexpected errors and ended up having to roll back to a backup taken earlier today (3PM PST). Total downtime was just under 2 hours and all data between 3pm pst and 9pm PST was lost. Some functionality will be reduced until we can safely turn it back on: Voting on feature requests & accepted answer functionality may not be available for a little while longer. You may notice some of your posts are gone, or you may have received emails about replies to your post that are now mysteriously absent. If you signed up between 3pm and 9pm PST, you’ll unfortunately have to recreate your account. I’m very sorry about the inconvenience. If you received an email in that timeframe with a reply that solved your problem, but that post is now gone from the site, consider copying & pasting from your email notification into a new reply and tagging the author so that everyone can benefit 🙂
We are facing unique challenges due to the blackouts and wildfires currently spreading near our headquarters in Santa Cruz, CA. We have multiple layers of redundancy for these situations, but it is possible there may be delays or downtime for live chat support during Pacific time business hours. There will be no impact to high severity issues. The last section of this post will be kept up-to-date with the latest service status. To our amazing customers, 2020 has truly been a year of challenges and tragedy across the world in so many ways. Nevertheless, DCL has appreciated the extent to which we have been able to stay connected in the literal sense as well as at the human level working together to solve data problems. We are working hard to continue that but are facing some very unique challenges in California at the moment. For our California based support team that covers 8am Pacific to 6pm Pacific we are facing challenges of wildfires roaring adjacent to our headquarters in Santa C
