All are welcome! 🕵📈 🕵️‍♀ Hey Data Explorers! 🕵️‍♀📈 🕵 The Data Explorers Guild is back 🎉 I’m excited for this months dataset (FAA data) and for our first user presentations of the guild. This month’s theme is “Data Curiosity”— That’ll be what we discuss, will shape our viz challenge, and will be reflected in the user presentations. If you’ve got questions about data curiosity, feel free to ask them in the comments below! We’ll be meeting again on Tuesday July 28 at 3PM PDT (Americas) and 3PM BST (EMEA). You must RSVP below to receive videoconference details and data access Agenda
It was just a matter of time for the nice purple colours to go away in favour of the boring white and blue. Does it mean that the UI of Looker itself will also change? Right now the colours are great and balanced, I don’t even want to imagine when, all of the sudden, Looker UI is basically white. Can you guys confirm what’s going to happen?
Our email service provider is having an outage and as a result, Looker is currently unable to send any email deliveries. We’re working with them to resolve this as quickly as possible. This only affects those using our default SMTP settings. If you are using a custom SMTP configuration, you should not experience any interruption. We’re sorry for the inconvenience. I’ll update this thread with more information when we have it. 09:26am PDT, June 1 2020

Hey all, During planned maintenance at 9:00pm PST today, we encountered some unexpected errors and ended up having to roll back to a backup taken earlier today (3PM PST). Total downtime was just under 2 hours and all data between 3pm pst and 9pm PST was lost. Some functionality will be reduced until we can safely turn it back on: Voting on feature requests & accepted answer functionality may not be available for a little while longer. You may notice some of your posts are gone, or you may have received emails about replies to your post that are now mysteriously absent. If you signed up between 3pm and 9pm PST, you’ll unfortunately have to recreate your account. I’m very sorry about the inconvenience. If you received an email in that timeframe with a reply that solved your problem, but that post is now gone from the site, consider copying & pasting from your email notification into a new reply and tagging the author so that everyone can benefit 🙂

If you don’t want to read my bored musings, skip to the bold part near the bottom. It’s fun, I promise. Hey Good Lookers, I imagine most of you around the world are all adjusting to the strange new world of working from home and trying to maintain some kind of normalcy in the age of COVID-19. If there is any way that I can help make your lives or jobs easier, please DM me and I’m happy to help. Here’s a fun little diversion that might help you regain a little bit of your regular sense of community. My favorite of our Looker company values is what we call the Kitchen Table. It isn’t just about a table, but rather refers to cultivating an atmosphere of open and participatory learning. Everyone should always feel able to “sit down at the kitchen table” next to anyone else and participate in whatever discussions are going on, learn from their peers (even if that peer is the CEO), and teach what they know. The Kitchen Table, or “KT” is also a real physical table in every Looker office, and
Looker is a Challenger in this Magic Quadrant for the first time. Its acquisition by Google both increases its market visibility and raises questions about its future integration into Google’s portfolio. tl;dr: The lookerapi python package for accessing the Looker API is deprecated. The unsupported package is now accessible via pip install lookerapi-deprecated. We encourage you to use our new, fully maintained SDK available here. What’s Happening? 4 New SDKs In the interest of making it easy to use the Looker API, Looker has previously documented how to use a tool called Swagger Codegen for users to generate their own client SDKs in languages of their choice. Over the years, folks have found it useful to have easier access to SDKs, and some of these user-generated packages have been pushed to various package managers (pip, npm, etc.). Those packages are not and were never officially maintained by Looker, but it’s proven very useful to have quick and easy ways to get started with the Looker API. We’ve noticed that! If you haven’t heard the news yet, we recently released a new Offical SDK generator called sdk-codegen, and along with it, 4 new official SDKs: Python (beta), Kotlin (alpha),
As most of you know then Looker 7 was announced a couple of days ago: Looker Looker 7: Find True Power In Your Data Looker is an enterprise-class platform that empowers users, data analysts, and application developers to get that value from their data. Lot’s of great new things coming: New Slack integration Dynamic dashboards Marketplace Multi-cloud hosting Rich development framework Wanted to know what others mostly expect from it and maybe there is something that you expected, but it’s not planned for version 7?
Hi Everyone, We are aware of issues affecting our helpdesk technology provider that powers Looker support and in-app chat. If you have trouble reaching us, please try again in a bit. We’ll be back with you as soon as possible. If you’d like, you can also ask any questions here, in the Looker Community!
Hello clever community members, What’s the number 1 topic/area of discussion around Looker or data in general that you’d be most interested in when it comes to hearing best practices from experts, sharing knowledge with peers, or getting help? Ex: “Making things dynamic with Looker”, “Caching for optimal performance”, “Vanity metrics”, and so on. Truly no topic too big or too small— Just share what you’re most interested in collaborating with others on. Just asking for a friend 😉. This may turn into something later, but right now, just collecting topics.
Hey Good Lookers, We’ll be doing a bit of housekeeping that will require ~10 minutes of community forum downtime at 19:00 PST. Nothing so exciting that you’ll notice anything upon reloading, but necessary nonetheless. No Looker instances will be affected— Just the community forum. See you on the other side!
Would love to hear, how the community is thinking about the Google acquire. What’re your thoughts? 🙂 Google Cloud Blog Google to Acquire Looker | Google Cloud Blog Google to acquire Looker, a unified platform for business intelligence, data applications, and embedded analytics.
Hey Looker Community! I’m Seema. I work on the Customer Experience team at Looker, so genuine customer feedback is really important to me. I also value gender equality in the workplace (as does everyone here at Looker) and assuring the success of young women who may grow up to work in computing. I’m guessing you do as well. That’s why I’m writing about how you can help with both of these things in one fell swoop - simply by providing us with a 5-minute review of Looker. Girls Who Code is on a mission to close the gender gap in technology. They’re building the largest pipeline of future female engineers in the United States! In support of that mission, Capterra, an independent tech and software review site, will donate $10 to “Girls Who Code” for each of the first 100 Looker users who complete a published review here. That’s $1000 for Girls Who Code! It’s simple and short. Click here and: Find Looker on Capterra Write a review Help Girls Who Code It only takes 5 minutes to do some go
Hey folks! Looker is being reviewed in the annual Dresner Wisdom of Crowds Survey, and I thought the community might like the opportunity to participate and give a personal review of Looker. As a participant, you actually get to shape an important industry report— and Dresner Advisory Services will send you a complimentary copy of the final version. The survey closes on March 29th, so make sure to get your input in before then. Here’s the link: https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/4734391/fc0a08347284 Thanks!
