Quick Start Queries in a separate file do not show up in Explore

After three tries with Support, I’m hoping that somebody here will be able to help me with this. I’m sure I’ve done it before but something is ecaping my brain and not sure why this isn’t working. 

I would like to add quick start queries to some explores but keep them physically in a different file. I created model/explore/generic lookml file and included my model, then used refinement but it’s not showing up

I tried to bring my query to a very minimum, one dimension, one measure - not from a joined view but nothing works.
