Joins within an explore work in development mode but not in "normal" explore mode

I have database with multiple tables and I am looking to join columns from the different tables together. I have understood that the best way to do this is within my model file and the explore section. My code works when I am in in Development Mode however, when I go to validate it (not in developer mode) I am getting error messages for “unknown” field (the fields I added in my explore via join). Any ideas how to resolve this?
