Add listen for dashboard filters to dashboard element via API

How can I link a dashboard filter to the relevant dashboard element via the API? I can create the filter and create the element, but cannot seem to link them.

On the API docs here I can see the result_maker field, which takes ResultMakerWithIdVisConfigAndDynamicFields (includes filterables field), but all the fields are marked as read only. I assume this is the field I would need to update from looking at the GET dashboard response.
