Custom Authentication

Hi. I am the BI Tool Adminstrator for my company and I am doing research on Looker as a possible replacement for Cognos and had a couple questions on Authentication that I couldn’t find an answer on. Does Looker have the ability to write your own custom authentication that can connect to a custom web portal that doesn’t use SAML and be able to load roles/groups from an external database? And also does the SAML support work with the SAML Assertion in a WS-Federation token, or just strictly SAML tokens?
