Amazon RDS to Looker Security and Speed

We are moving from an instance hosted by our company to an instance hosted by Looker.

We need to move our connections to the Looker hosted instance.

We want the new database connections to be secure and fast.

How do I ensure that ssh tunnelling is fast? In my experience, ssh is slow. We want to just use a VPN but that is not an option to connect to Looker. A VPN would be both fast and secure. We need an answer as soon as possible because the old looker instance is being depreciated.
