Error when Enabling GKE Backup:Etcd alias ip must be enabled for Backup for GKE addon

I'm trying to enable GKE backup on a cluster.

Some details on the cluster:

  • The cluster is on GKE version "1.24.10-gke.2300".
  • My cluster is a zonal cluster.
  • It has workload identity enabled
  • Has the GKE Metadata Server enabled on the nodepool.

I really followed the docs step by step to enable GKE backup.

I also setup GKE Backup on a few testing clusters and documented the whole process of enabling it and getting it working.

When I try enable the GKE backup on the cluster's settings in GKE I get this error:

"Etcd alias ip must be enabled for Backup for GKE addon"

See screenshot aswell:

I know this error seems pretty self explanatory. Implying I would have to recreate the cluster with etcd-alias IP enabled.

I'm just hoping there is some solution that does not involve recreating all my clusters just to enable GKE backup.

This would be a huge amount of effort to enable etc-alias IP on all my clusters, also there was nothing mentioned about this in the documentation: https://cloud.google.com/kubernetes-engine/docs/add-on/backup-for-gke/how-to/install

The only other info I could find on the topic was this stackoverflow post:

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/74391649/cannot-enable-backup-for-gke-because-etcd-alias-ip-must...

One suggestion was to wait a bit. Which I've tried (waited 24hours already ) with no success.

Thanks for your help.

Well suddenly it worked. After waiting the weekend.
So for anyone else reading this.
Just wait a few more days and try again 🙂
