Re-using existing python code to speed up Looker extension development

We need to do some specialized data science processing in Python and visualize the results in a Looker  dashboards. We are planning to create Looker extensions for this purpose, but we have only found references to using JavaScript and NodeJS in the extensions apps. 
Is it possible to use JavaScript or NodeJS  for authentication, Etc., but use our existing python code for data processing and/or visualization?
Any pointers are greatly appreciated.
