Google Maps API Restriction Feature Change and broke our site - Why behavior changed?

"Set an application restriction" behavior has changed.

Few days ago "Set an application restriction" was working fine, with "Websites" and with our website entered in the list. We used to have restriction set that worked "https://*.oursite.com"

However NOW, we must have restriction set as follows for it to work:
"https://*.oursite.com/*"

Why has "Set an application restriction" behavior changed?
How can we be assured google is not going to break our site again without any notice?
