Problems routing to AWS?

For the past two days we've been seeing sporadic problems connecting from a GCE instance in us-central1-f to instances in AWS' us-west-2 region. At the same time, we're able to get to AWS' us-east-2 region without problems. The problem will seem to happen for about 10 minutes, then recover for an hour or two.

Running a traceroute from our machine at the time will fail almost immediately when going to the west coast machine, but works fine when going to the east coast machine.

We have not made any network changes on either the GCP or AWS side in a very long time.

Any idea what might be happening? Any thoughts how to investigate this further?

Hi @AFirstenberg

Welcome to Google Cloud Community!

It may be challenging to troubleshoot this issue without more visibility on your project as I need more information to diagnose the issue but there's a large variety of tools you can use to troubleshoot connectivity issues.

  1. Usage of network diagnostic tools such as ping and traceroute.
  2. Usage of cloud monitoring tools in both GCP and AWS as these tools can help you analyze, visualize and troubleshoot your network’s health.
  3. Usage of cloud diagnostic tools such as Google Cloud Network Intelligence Center.
  4. You can also check for any outages on either GCP and AWS.

For solutions, you might consider creating a Cross-Cloud Interconnect between Google Cloud and AWS network or a high availability connection, HA-VPN between Google Cloud and AWS.

I hope you find this information useful.
