Question

Drill down in visualisation disappears with more than one dimension

Hi Looker team,

I have added some url-links to a dimension, which work fine when displayed in table form. With a single dimension (string) and a measure (count) the drill down menu is also available in a visualisation (e.g. bar plot). If I add a second dimension (also a string), the barplot dimension values become a concatenation of the two strings from the two dimensions. This is also fine. However, the drop down menu is not available anymore. Is this not available yet, or am I missing something? Thanks in advance!

Hey @barend_l, you’re right that the dropdown menu is only available for a single dimension. We don’t have any functionality built in for the concatenations you get when selecting two dimensions.

What would you ideally like to see here? A drill for each (“Drill into X” and “Drill into Y”), or a drill for both (“Drill into X and Y”)?

You could concatenate both fields together in the LookML and then define drills on that field as a workaround. I’m interested in your use case here!

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the quick response! It would be sufficient (for now) to have a single drill show up, even if I plot two dimension versus a measure.

So say we have dimension firstname and lastname, and some measure. In my dataset, these will be unique sets between firstname and lastname so no duplicated exist. I only have the external url links (via dropdown menu) for the firstname dimension. If I only plot firstname against a measure, I can still select the url’s in a visualisation. However, if I add the lastname (which doesn’t have any link fields) these link fields disappear from my visualisation. Does that makes sense?

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. So you’re actually using the links LookML parameter - in that case, showing the relevant links from one or both dimensions would be super nice. I’ll let the product team know you’d like this functionality!

Well, getting the links from one dimension is possible for me, but only if I have only that single dimension in my query. As soon as I add another, the names on the axis do concatenate, but the links disappear in the visualisation.

Right - currently, we haven’t built in support for links on that concatenation. I think it is a good idea and I will let the product team know for you. In the meantime, the workaround would be to manually concat the fields in LookML and stick the desired links on that new dimension.

Yup, will give that a try. Thanks for the swift feedback! Cheers
