Counting records in a month by a date range

I’m pretty new to Looker and trying to figure out how to create a certain type of dashboard.

I have a number of records with the following relevant fields:

• StartDate
• EndDate

One of these records is considered “active” during this date range.

I’d like to build something in Explore which shows a count of records that were active on the last day of each month, and show the total so we can track how many of these records are active over time.

Even better would be to show a count of any records that were “active” at any point in the month, but I can live with the last day calculation.

Any suggestions how to tackle something like this? I was thinking I could create a dimension for each month, but that doesn’t seem like a particularly elegant solution.
